Two homes for girls in Karnataka

At present we are progressing with the work of two new homes - to house girls from real remote and rural areas to house them so that they can access education and hope for a better future for themselves and for their families.

1. Don Bosco - Prakashpalaya: The home for girls is meant for those who have completed class X and needs to study further in our Junior College that offers equivalent to class XI and XII. The programme already running in very dilapidated conditions will change with the new building under progress. The work is on and we hope to have the place ready in the next three months.
2. Don Bosco - Deodurga: This remote village in the district of raichur has one of the lowest educational and development standards. The Salesians of Don Bosco began the mission with a school and social work activities and we are presently constructing a home for the girl children so that those from the interior villages could reside and access quality education that can surely bring about the require change in the area. The construction is in progress and we hope to complete the same in about 6 months from now.

We look forward to continued support of well wishers to complete these projects so that we can continue our efforts at promotion of education and the development of the girls and women, particularly in rural areas.

Prakashpalaya - Home for Girls

The work has begun... The girl children who presently stay in an old shed are surely happy and relieved to know and to look ahead to this work to be completed.  I am talking about the project - construction of a home for the girls who study in our Don Bosco Junior College at Prakashpalaya. The courageous step of starting the construction has begun with less than one third of the funds available. But I am sure that the divine providence will work through some individuals or groups to support this project.

It is planned and we hope that the new facility will be available by June 2010 so that they could find themselves in a decent shelter home at the beginning of the next academic year. The buliding that will have 347.14 sq. meters will have facilities for kitchen, dining, study and dormitory with a couple of rooms for office, warden and common facilities.

It is a project that we have been interested in for long but not able to launch due to shortage of resources. We do hope that there will be support to this project. The girls and the boys in the hostel at Prakashpalaya are surely wishing well and praying for all benefactors.

Flood in North Karnataka

The recent torrential rain and the subsequent flood have left many homeless in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh states of South India. Our project areas in North Karnataka have also been affected with this situation.

1. Don Bosco Deodurga: Deodurga is a Taluk in Raichur district and many villages were affected with overflowing rivers, canals etc. In the villages we work, many houses have collapsed due to incessant rain. Many houses in the area are just built with mud and stones or even dry sticks put together. Quite a few houses were also badly damaged with partial collapse and leaking roof etc. Our initial fact finding has identified about 30 houses that has to be rebuilt and about the same number that needs repair - some of them as good as re-construction.
2. Don Bosco Yadgir:Our project at Yadgir has a skill training centre, B Ed College, D Ed College, School, Hostel for girls and Community based actions in about 26 villages. The sudden flood inundated the entire campus at about midnight and all the inmates had to take shelter on first floor ( hostel inmates) and the Salesian Personnel had to wade through about 4 feet water to reach the college building to settle on its first floor. The rescue from Police and Fire personnel with small boats happened during the next morning. While all are safe, there has been extensive damage to property. The computer lab, Library books, printed teaching and instruction materials, new books for the school etc have been lost.

While the waters have receded the people are trying to get back to the reality. For most people of the area their crops on which they depend on livelihood has been totally destroyed.

I will be visiting these places in the coming week and will post more information about the situation in these projects.

Urgent Projects

Oh.. my.. we have to do something... to construct boarding homes for girls at Deodurga in Raichur district. Known for its backwardness and slow growth, we would like to provide to the girls of the many villages an access to education through this project.

The immediate requirement is to have the funds to construct a multi purpose facility that can serve as the boarding home untill we are able to have a pucca hostel for them in the Project.

I am looking for willing hands and hearts who can cooperate with us in this idea and in the materialisation of this idea into action... Come on.. come all...

The total budget is Rupees 35,00,000/- If there are hundred people who can put $ 2 a day for one year - we can realise this project. Can you be one? Can you get a couple of others to join?
